We have lost our story. And story is the most essential element of our humanness. Narrative. Myth. Poetry. Who we are, where we have come from, where we are going- story binds us collectively, and individually. It operates much like personality operates on the psychic level- it provides integrity, structure, consistency, values. It allows us to answer key questions about how we should engage with each other and the world around us. And right now, afoot in the 21st century, our story has nearly disappeared. We are left cold and alone in the face of an expanding cosmos, godless, hopeless, tortured disfigurements of anxious atomic flux who strive only towards economic success, a success that is measure solely on outcomes and never on methods, a success that is posted and retweeted and drooled over at cellular screens. Our value system? Win at all costs. Acquire as much as possible. Forget about death, the dead, the dying. Live for the fulfillment of now. React to every impulse. Release every molecule of dopamine.
There can be no future for humanity until we take accountability as individuals. We must learn to rewrite our own stories. We must accept responsibility for who we are, how our actions will resonate into the future, and whether those actions will be measured favorably when compared to the past. We are points along a continuum, interdependent. This work is my point, my locus, my story. It is changing. It is evolving. But it is mine. I encourage you to find yours.
