I’m an old man with recollections of his prayers, since I had once been a boy with rosary beads loose between my fingers praying for vague notions of happiness, and I had once been a young man who cursed his prayers for his wife and his child, prayers whispered in a beige Maternity Ward, waiting outside doors in hallways, scared and confused, I denounced the LORD and I dispelled what I had believed, a story dreamed up to infuse our pitiful lifetimes with a feeling of purpose, to gain footing in the face of heartless wastelands, and even though for many years I closed myself off to any kind of story about the world, now I’m an old man, and with my recollections, with my life behind me, I know the stories are who we are, the stories are what we have been and what we will become, our stories grapple with the mystery because the mystery surrounds us and by nature we are story tellers, and the stories about the world have changed and will continue to change, because a story’s power depends on different factors, and though no story is wrong, none are right, the mystery is too big to comprehend, to be contained inside a story, so we can only fit pieces of it, now I’m an old man who is aware of his limitations, our limitations, our limited understanding, I know I have fallen short, but I also continued to search, and even though I rejected one story I soon devised another, I uncovered the petroglyphs, I went into caves and I climbed up canyon walls hoping to find a way across, across worlds, because I believed it was possible, I might see her again, I might see her with her eyes open, I might find a way to her, or she’d find her way to me, and somehow those faint markings in the stone would unlock our way back to each other, I’m an old man with his recollections of prayers, and I’m praying again, in my own way.
